Veruca Salt - Sweet & Sour
[Live [May 15, 1997] Saturday Night Live]
[Live [August 15, 1997] Water Festival, Stockholm]
I have a sweet tooth for Veruca Salt. Not the ill-mannered Veruca from Willy Wonka, but Chicago's own kid rock girl group. Sure they're not all girls, but the 'little sister' vibe permeates the performances here. With teen-girl angst and double the attitude, Veruca Salt was essentially Nina Gordon (songwriter - for the memorable songs) and Louise Post (the "other" one). They eventually lost momentum and called it quits, and though they barely left a ripple in the halcyon days post Grunge, their heavy rotation singles still hit you in the face like a pack of old Bubble Yum. Sure the punk-pop-crunch was juvenile and the sentiments even more so, but the rest - the hooks, earnestness and attitude - were all Rock-n-Roll: "Blow it out your ass, it's Veruca Salt" was the title of their Steve Albini produced second EP. The title says it all. Enjoy.
